Kelly Hall YMCA

Located in Chicago, Illinois, the Kelly Hall YMCA, a collaboration between the Archdiocese of Chicago and the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago, opened its doors in January 2009. Updated with a $2.3 million renovation, the facility now has a new roof and new flooring throughout as well as new HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems. The new YMCA will provide a safe haven for the community and a wide range of services, including after-school programs for neighborhood children, gang intervention services, activities for seniors, a new food pantry stocked by the Greater Chicago Food Depository, and a computer lab and fitness center for all residents.

The building’s renovation project focused on recycling and reusing materials. In fact, all building materials removed from the facility were sent to a recycler and a large portion of the materials used were recycled or reused in some way. Working with a neutral color palette in common spaces and more dynamic color choices in specific areas, the facility showcases a broad color spectrum. The most colorful spaces include the multipurpose and arts and crafts rooms. Emphasizing color and design, Azrock donated its 2008 NeoCon® show room floor design instead of discarding it to landfill. Now these creative spaces are revived with fresh color and interesting design elements.

About Kelly Hall YMCA

Located in a very challenged and underserved community, the local neighborhood is in complete support of the YMCA project and feels some ownership. The outside of the building has retained the original artwork mural from 1968. The entire building, a former school gymnasium and community center, is approximately 24,000 square feet. With the exception of the refurbished gymnasium floor, the entire facility received new flooring, from solid vinyl tile to carpet to ceramic tile. The multi-purpose room and arts and crafts area, which totals over 1,000 square feet, feature the donated floor design. Much of the common spaces and hallways also feature commercial floor tile from Johnsonite’s Azrock Collection.

The Solid Vinyl Tile (SVT) used will drastically reduce the necessary maintenance, water usage and chemical cleaning. With proper care, the overall cost of a SVT floor can be reduced by up to fifty percent over a seven-year time span. The overall renovation project revived and replaced existing building materials that were deteriorating.
